Art Deco Mermaids!

I have been fortunate to go out to Catalina Island, one of the channel islands found off the Southern California coast, on several occasions. I love the tile found on the island and the classic Cali style. This last time I learned new facts about the architecture of the famous casino building. I knew that the original painting on the inside and out was done by John Gabriel Beckman, who also painted the Chinese theatre in Los Angeles. However I did not know that after the famous mermaid was redone in tile by Richard T. Keit. My last visit I enjoined the organ music, while admiring the dome interior art done by Beckman. Life’s good, enjoy!
